Harbor Station started as an assignment for school to build a blockout level design focused on shape and form. These screenshots showcase the final blockout and gameplay implementation. The level has the player following a path through an industrialized harbor/train station, overcoming several obstructions as they seek to board a train to the refinery across the river. The level took roughly a week for the basic geometry with a second week to implement and test the gameplay.
The level was constructed using the Unreal Engine 4 and their First Person Template. One requirement of the assignment was to avoid any use of weapons for gameplay so the level focuses on non-combat and exploration challenges. The player needs to explore and unlock each section of the map to progress towards the final goal of crossing the river. Another important element of the design was to give the player a visual landmark in the distance (refinery) as well as allow them a clear view of a large portion of the level early in play (The various views of the train station from above).
